A Brief Introduction to Tilopa Institute
"In 1992 Ani Pema Zangmo bought the land in Himachal Pradesh, where Tilopa Institute stands now, and started the construction works. In 1998 most of the works on the temple and the monks quarters were finished and the monastery’s opening ceremony was conducted. From then on all dharmic activity according to the monastic tradition were performed continuously.
Especially in the years 2003 to 2009 the Karma Kagyu rituals and practices, Tibetan language and reading, English and Hindi were taught in Tilopa Institute. After finishing four years of studies in Tilopa Institute the students would proceed their further studies in the Kalimpong Shedra. Even though the training of young monks was interrupted, the traditional activities of the monastery were continued from 2009 to 2015.
In June 2015 Ani Pema Zangmo offered the complete institute to H.H. Gyalwa Karmapa, and on the 1st of December 2015 Karmapa took the full responsibility for Tilopa Institute.
Under the supervision of H.H. Karmapa the institute houses now 55 people, including 42 students, 6 teachers, and 7 staff members. Following H.H. Karmapa’s instructions the institute has arranged a curriculum including the studies of Tibetan language and spelling, the practice of the rituals of the Karma Kamtsang Lineage, foundations in the Buddha Dharma, Hindi, English, and Mathematics. In the future we would like to extend the curriculum according to time and necessity.
After 5 years of studying in Tilopa Institute the students will have a solid foundation in their studies and will be ready to precede higher studies in the Kalimpong Shedra for another 10 years. In short, Tilopa Institute functions as the primary level of the Kalimpong Shedra, and in this function we plan to enlarge the institute and increase the number of students in the future."

"Tashi Delek from Tilopa Institute!
Last December Tilopa Institute got reanimated with 50 boys. Khenpo Rigzin was appointed by H.H. Gyalwa Karmapa to teach monks aged 6-19 in Tibetan language and reading, Hindi and English languages plus first knowledge of the Karma Kagyu rituals and practices and also basic things about life. Such as health care and hygiene. Many boys arrived with various skin diseases and other sicknesses. We are very grateful to KHCP to give immediately financial support as it is really needed. We are also looking forward to the visit of the doctor and dentist team.
Some Western volunteers help us to teach the children daily hygiene, keep their rooms and cloth clean and assist with first aid.
We wish you all a happy day! "
