About the project
The Karmapa´s Healthcare Project e.V., abbreviated KHCP e.V., is a non-profit charitable association, which is based on donations, willingness to help and Western scientific knowledge.
The Project pursues a humanitarian approach and not a religious missionary approach.
All Western helpers, including the board of directors, are unpaid volunteers who work without compensation.
In close collaboration with His Holiness the 17th Karmapa Trinley Thaye Dorje, the KHCP was founded in Kalimpong, India in 2005 and was officially registered as a non-profit charitable association in Germany.
In the meantime, more than 26 monasteries , nunneries, orphanages and schools in India and Nepal can be supported.
The KHCP mainly focuses on healthcare, medical prevention and education. Its goal is not only to provide healthcare for the monks and nuns of the monasteries and schools, but also to cater to the needs of the poor local population.
Mobile medical and dental camps are a good method to achieve this goal. At our annual medical camp in Bodhgaya we provide up to 1500-5000 treatments in one week.
Furthermore, over the last 20years, we could etablished several small health centers within or in the surroundings of our Karma Kagyu monasteries, which are also supposed to function as contact points for the local population. Already four health centers have been etablished.
Right now we are again in another planning phase and are hoping for the necessary support.
We are constantly looking for medical advisors as well as donations for these projects.

Since 2012, a collaboration has developed between Dhulikhel University Hospital Kathmandu with its Director Prof. Dr. Ram Sheestra and the KHCP.
What was at first planned as a medical contact point has now developed to be a platform for a combination between medicine and social work. The following is a short overview of the features planned and already developing:
- Local doctors and medical staff are hired by the KHCP and also get the opportunity for further training
- Students of medicine from East and West can do internships with the KHCP
- Socio-medical topics are developed together
- Monks and nuns can learn in the environment of Dhulikhel Hospital by being guest observers or by taking part in workshops on medical topics
- Since the KHCP also puts great emphasis on a social-scientific approach, academic studies can be conducted
Further collaboration of KHCP:
- Since 2015 - Collaboration of KHCP and Nepal Care Association
It starts during the mayor earthquake of Nepal in 2015 when Lama Nyima and friends did diverse aid tours and the KHCP gave some financial support.
In 2019 Lama Nyima and the directors of Nepal Care as well as Peter and Pia, founders of the KHCP, decided to develop further actions. So later KHCP e.g. donated € 6,000 to Nepal Care to fund the Deurali Women’s Training Program in India. - Since about 2017 - In accordance with Jigme Rinpoche the KHCP and Infinite Compassion e.V. collaborate
- Since 2020 - Collaboration of KHCP and KTM-Khyenkong Tharjay Manjughosha Association
KTM develops a clinic in the premises of the new Karma Temple building at Bodhgaya under the guidance of H.E. Beru Khyentse Rinpoche.
KHCP had offer this vision already in 2010 with Rinpoche and since 2020 we support the KTM-campaigns (specially the field camps in the villages around Bodhgaya) with money and medical volunteers. - KHCP is always open to special relief initiatives undertaken by our Kagyu monasteries, such as the aid measures during the recent flood disaster in Nepal. In this instance, KHCP transferred funds to various monastic teams.
And already in 2015 during the mayor earthquake of Nepal we completed a grand KHCP-fundraising (more than 170.000 €uro collected in 8 weeks). We could share this money and communicate with over 25 relief initiatives: - KHCP Donation Listing for earthquake campaigns:

KAGYU MONLAM MEDICALCAMP
(Founded in 2007 by Shamar Rinpoche and PiaPeter)
Since December 2008, we have been organizing extensive medical aid initiatives in collaboration with medical professionals as part of the annual Kagyu Monlam. This initiative has been a great success, recording between 1,500 and 4,000 treatments each year.
The volunteers on site come from all over the world; across the past 18 medical camps, teams have consisted of up to 50 volunteers from as many as 23 nations. These medical services will continue to be an integral part of the Kagyu Monlam, supported by the Kagyu Monlam Committee, the Mahabodhi Society, and local doctors and their hospital.
During the Kagyu Monlam, all institutions from the Himalayan region collaborate with the KHCP to facilitate communication with their respective representatives and ensure the highest possible standard of care and modern medical treatment across all facilities.
